Pull Out a Loose Baby Tooth or Let It Fall Out?
Loose baby teeth are best left alone until they are ready to come out. In most cases, nature does the work, no wiggling, pulling, or intervention needed.
Should a Loose Baby Tooth Be Pulled Out?
Generally, no. Pulling it before it’s ready can be painful and cause more bleeding than necessary.
That said, sometimes a loose baby tooth does need a dentist’s attention. If left too long, it can cause gum inflammation and block the eruption of the adult tooth. In rare cases, a tooth fragment can remain in the gum, an experience that may upset your child and contribute to dental anxiety.
If you’re unsure about the situation, give your dentist a call. And if the tooth became loose after a fall, bump, or sports injury, it’s always best to have it checked.
How to Handle a Loose Baby Tooth
The best thing your child can do is gently wiggle the tooth with a clean finger or tongue, a little movement goes a long way. If it’s causing sensitivity, soft foods or smaller bites can help avoid discomfort. Otherwise, normal chewing does the job on its own. Brushing and flossing should carry on as usual in the meantime.
If Your Child Is Anxious About a Loose Tooth
Try not to make a big deal out of it. Telling your child that you, or the dentist, may pull the tooth out can make them more nervous and reluctant to let anyone near it.
Instead, reassure them that loose baby teeth almost always fall out on their own. They can wiggle it when they feel like it, and leave it alone when they don’t.
Will There Be Bleeding?
A little bleeding is completely normal, nothing to worry about. Have your child bite gently on a clean piece of gauze for a few minutes and the bleeding should stop on its own. If it seems heavy or doesn’t stop, give your dentist a call.
Celebrate the Milestone!
Losing a tooth is a big moment for kids. Whether the tooth fairy visits or your family has its own tradition, it is worth celebrating.
Once the loose baby tooth has fallen out, it’s a great time to book a checkup at Playtime Dentistry to make sure everything is on track.
