Infant Oral Health

Infant oral health care is about setting the foundation for a healthy smile. It’s important to keep their gums clean early on to promote healthy tooth development. At our pediatric dental practice we emphasize early care because it sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. By partnering with a pediatric dentist, you ensure the best start for your child’s oral health.

The Three Phases of Infant Oral Health

  1. Gum Care (Before Teeth Erupt): Before teeth emerge, it’s important to gently clean your baby’s gums after feedings. Using a clean, damp washcloth or a soft infant gum brush, you can wipe away any residue or bacteria. This keeps the gums healthy and helps your baby get used to the idea of oral care early on. Establishing this routine helps create a smooth transition when teeth start to come in.
  2. Baby Teeth Eruption (6-12 Months): Once teeth begin to appear, usually between 6 and 12 months, it’s time to brush these tiny teeth twice a day. Use a soft-bristled, age-appropriate toothbrush and a small smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). This helps protect the baby teeth, which play a crucial role in speech development, chewing, and maintaining space for permanent teeth.
  3. First Dental Visit (By Age 1): The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your baby’s first dental visit by their first birthday. This visit serves as an opportunity to catch any potential issues early, and provide you with guidance on caring for your child’s teeth. Additionaly, Pediatric dentists are trained specifically to work with infants, ensuring a gentle and comfortable experience. Click here to book a dental appointment.
