Playtime Pediatric Dentistry | Meet Dr. Ella Choi | Vancouver + South Surrey Pediatric Dentist

Dedicated to Dentistry, Dedicated to Families.

I am a certified pediatric dentist and the founder of Playtime Pediatric Dentistry. At Playtime, we use tailored behaviour guidance techniques to promote a positive dental attitude and offer sedation to provide the highest quality of care safely. I received my Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta in 2010. Prior to specializing in Pediatric Dentistry, I worked as a general dentist in Calgary, Alberta. I received a Diploma in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of British Columbia. I also have a Masters Degree in Craniofacial Science. My research was about x-ray radiation in pediatric patients and it was published in Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics.

I am a member of Canadian Dental Association, Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, British Columbia Dental Association and British Columbia Society of Pediatric Dentists. I am also a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, which makes me a board certified specialist in Canada. I am a part of BC Society of Pediatric Dentists where I served as the president in 2017.

I believe in giving back to the community, especially to help underprivileged children. In 2014, I volunteered at Special Smiles at the Special Olympics in Vancouver. In 2013, I volunteered at Open Wide Community Day in Burnaby. In 2011, I went to Guatemala for a volunteer trip with Dentistry for All. I worked as a clinical professor and taught dental students at the University of British Columbia.

My husband and I enjoy spending time with our son Luke and travelling in our spare time. We love living in the Lower Mainland because it is the perfect place for us to work and play.

Playtime Pediatric Dentistry | Meet Dr. Raylien Chao | Vancouver + South Surrey Pediatric Dentist

Making a Big Difference in Little Smiles

As a pediatric dentist and a mother of two young children, I enjoy both my day and night job being around fascinating little ones. I love building relationships with compassion and offering guidance and help to establish long-lasting healthy smiles. It is a privilege for me to be part of young children’s life journeys as they become remarkable adults. My goal is to help children find comfort, courage, and confidence in caring for their oral health. I promise to care for your little one as I would for my own.

I obtained my bachelor of science degree in Economics with a business minor certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010 (Go Badger!). Having found my true passion in “people,” I took a turn in my career and followed my beloved grandmother’s footsteps in becoming a dentist. In preparation for dentistry, I received a Master’s degree from Columbia University in Human Nutrition in 2011 and researched the links between periodontal disease and obesity. My thesis was later published in the Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism.

Driven by my passion for disease prevention, I founded the student chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. I obtained my Doctor of Dental Surgeon degree with high distinction in 2015. I was honoured with multiple scholarship nominations and was one of the 40 Paul Ambrose scholars selected to participate in the National Association for Prevention Teaching and Research in Washington, DC.

My pediatric specialty training took place in the beautiful sunshine state, Florida, with New York University Langone Health Center in Suncoast Community Health Center, Tampa General Hospital (a Level I trauma centre), and South Florida Baptist Hospital. I also served as the chief resident in my senior year. I am a board-certified pediatric dental specialist in both the US and Canada.

Much of my experiences volunteering helped shape me as a well-rounded healthcare provider in the community locally, nationally, and internationally. You can find me in Ronald McDonald House serving food, in summer camp being silly with kids, in kindergarten and elementary schools teaching children about their mouths, at the city hall lobbying on behalf of patients and the dental profession, and at dental mission trips near and far. The excitement from tasting cocoa in Guatemala and watching the stars from the southern hemisphere in Bolivia is still vivid in my mind. I am so lucky to find real joy and excitement in my profession!

I am currently active in our community in Vancouver as a member of BCDA, serving on the Early Childhood Caries Prevention Task Force and of AAPD, CAPD, ABPD, RCDC, CCDSBC, CDSPD, DSSBC, and the Greater Vancouver Study Club. I regularly participate in continuing education to stay on top of the latest advancement in dentistry. I also enjoy teaching and am a part-time clinical assistant professor at UBC pediatric dental department.

Born in the US and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, I am fluent in Mandarin and English. I met my husband in New York City during my student life and moved to his beloved hometown, Vancouver, in 2017. I enjoy traveling, being an amateur photographer, playing music with my guitar, having silly dance parties with my girls, and singing karaoke. You will find me humming Disney songs around the clinic! I also play ultimate frisbee in the summer. My latest passion is blogging about baby teeth and documenting my baby girls’ dental journey to show that you are not alone as a parent!

Playtime Pediatric Dentistry | Meet Dr. Jassica Sarai | South Surrey Pediatric Dentist

Creating a Positive and Nurturing Dental Experience for Children.

Dr. Jassica Sarai is a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry. She believes in fostering strong dentist-child relationships through her gentle and caring approach to dental care. This, in turn, helps achieve her goal of creating positive dental experiences for every child. Dr. Jassica understands that many children are nervous about visiting the dental office. However, by explaining the steps of each procedure beforehand, much of the anxiety can be alleviated.

Dr. Jassica received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 2015 from the University of British Columbia. After working in the lower mainland as a general dentist for 2 years, she decided to pursue her pediatric dentistry passion. Dr. Jassica returned to the University of British Columbia to complete her pediatric dentistry specialty (2020). During her training, Dr. Jassica spent 2 years working in the dental clinic at BC Children’s Hospital, where she provided comprehensive dental care for children with complex medical needs. She concurrently obtained a Master’s in Craniofacial Science. Her research aimed to understand space maintenance, which focuses on treatment options for the early loss of baby teeth. Dr. Jassica is also a member of the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the British Columbia Dental Association.

Dr. Jassica believes that laughter is the best medicine, so in her spare time, she loves to attend comedy shows and watch funny movies. She also has a huge collection of board games and puzzles (including her 1000-piece Disney puzzle) and enjoys playing them with her family and friends.
